RANKING SYSTEM EXPLANATION
This Champions League ranking is updated based on the results of the two most recent Champions League seasons (the previous season and the current season).
- Purpose
The Champions League ranking is primarily used for the following:
- Some clubs are invited to participate in the Champions League Qualification Stage based on the ranking;
- The ranking is used to determine which clubs are invited to the European Cup (based on the current season’s ranking points).
Matches and seasons included in the ranking
Every Champions League match played by a club during the current and previous seasons is included in the ranking. Points from the current season are counted in full, while only 50% of the points from the previous season are included. If a club does not participate in the Champions League during the two seasons, it is removed from the ranking.
Points system
(A) 6 points
- Win in a Final Stage quarter-final, semi-final, or medal match
(B) 4.5 points
- Win in a Final Stage group match or placement match
- Win in a Qualification Stage quarter-final, semi-final, or medal match
(C) 4 points
- Win in a Final Stage quarter-final, semi-final, or medal match in overtime or in an extra throws competition
(D) 3 points
- Win in a Final Stage placement match in overtime or in an extra throws competition
- Win in a Qualification Stage quarter-final, semi-final, or medal match in overtime or in an extra throws competition
- Win in a Qualification Stage group match or placement match
(E) 2 points
- Loss in a Final Stage quarter-final, semi-final, or medal match in overtime or in an extra throws competition
- Win in a Qualification Stage placement match in overtime or in an extra throws competition
(F) 1.5 points
- Loss in a Final Stage placement match in overtime or in an extra throws competition
- Loss in a Qualification Stage quarter-final, semi-final, or medal match in overtime or in an extra throws competition
- Draw in a final stage Group game
(G) 1 point
- Loss in a Qualification Stage placement match in overtime or in an extra throws competition
- Draw in a qualification stage Group game.
4. Special points
In the following situations, clubs have been awarded special points in the ranking:
If no quarter-finals, semi-finals, or medal matches were played in the Qualification Stage, the tournament winner received 4.5 extra points, the runner-up 3 extra points, and the third-placed team 1.5 extra points. This compensates for the advantage gained by clubs that played playoff matches in their Qualification Stage;
The host team of the current season’s Final Stage receives 15 extra points, as it cannot participate in the Qualification Stage and therefore cannot accumulate ranking points there;
The host team of the previous season’s Final Stage receives 7.5 extra points, as it could not participate in the Qualification Stage in the previous season and thus could not accumulate ranking points.
5. Goal average per game
All goals scored and conceded by a club are included in the total goal difference. The average number of goals scored and conceded per match is calculated by dividing the total number of goals by the number of matches played. Goalaverage per game becomes decisive if teams are tied on points in the ranking.
6. Ranking tie-breakers
The ranking order between teams is determined by the following criteria:
A. Total points collected
B. Difference between the average goals scored and conceded
C. Average goals conceded
D. Column-by-column comparison starting from 6-point wins downward; if in any column one team has more wins or draws, that team ranks higher
